Nintendo Just Registered A New Game Boy Trademark In Japan

There's also a possibility that Nintendo is planning on releasing a new entry in its series of classic consoles: The Game Boy Classic Edition. In a Japanese Twitter account that seems to track trademarks (via Sora News 24; via Fortune), it makes mention of the Game Boy.

Gizmodo Japan is one of many Japanese sites wondering if this means a Nintendo Classic Mini Game Boy is coming and pointed out (via US Gamer) that this past winter, Nintendo Europe also filed for a Nintendo 64 trademark.

It's worth noting that the trademark application doesn't specifically use the "Game Boy" name as part of its filing, as Kotaku points out, but the image of the classic handheld system is hard to mistake for literally anything else. As of now, there has been no comment from Nintendo over the development.

Looking for something a little more universal? DarkGiygas created this awesome border, which mimics original Super Nintendo box art. With the NES Classic re-release happening in Summer 2018 there is really no reason for Nintendo to add another retro system into the mix next year. In 2005, the Japanese firm came up with a smaller version of the Game Boy Advance, dubbed as the Game Boy Micro.

Nokia Halts Virtual Reality Camera Development Citing "Slower Than Expected" Market
However, negotiations on reducing staff numbers and costs must start the process, and so talks will soon begin in Finland. Despite the halt, Nokia will continue to honor its commitments with existing customers.

Originally filed on September 15, the posting flew under the radar until this week.

As for why the company is filing these patents, Nintendo could just be attempting to prevent third-party companies from using the likeness of the Game Boy or the Nintendo 64 for non-affiliated products. That move seems even more likely as the 30th anniversary of the first Game Boy will happen in 2019.

According to a post on Famitsu and subsequent thread on NeoGAF, the SNES Classic has sold over 368,000 units in just four days. The N64 Classic Edition is rumored to launch sometime next year.
