International Day of the Girl Child 2017 observed globally

This is why it's important to celebrate International Day of the Girl

About 7.5 million girls become child brides every year in countries where early marriage is banned, the World Bank and global charity Save the Children said in a report. It is also known as Day of the Girl or International Girl Child Day. "Even as the government schemes are in place, the basic mindset of the society towards girls has not changed much yet", said Komal Ganotra, Director, Policy & Advocacy, CRY.In terms of drop-out rate, the report states "only 1 in 2 girls in the country complete school education".

A panel discussion bringing together the selected empowered girls as motivation for other young girls was also arranged.

The World Bank in June said ending child marriage would reduce population growth, boost girls educational achievements and increase their earnings.

A BBC correspondent on security issues Frank Gardner believes that Sally Jones has been an important agent of propaganda "ID". When she arrived she married British-Pakastani hacker Junaid Hussain who was killed in a drone strike in 2015.

Miss Antwi said Girls around the world lived in total fear of discrimination, stigmatization and violence simply for daring to make their dreams a reality whilst millions more live with no hope of ever realizing their potentials due to poverty and inequality.

For many girls, the latter rings more true in their lives, as some of their basic rights have been either denied or taken away from them. The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls' empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights. Along with it being an awesome showcase of girls' talents, the Freedom for Girls campaign provides resources on how to achieve the Global Goals by helping with things like stopping violence against girls, getting girls in school, and ending child marriage by 2030.
