Paris to Ban Fossil Fuel Cars by 2030

France's capital city, the world's most visited city, according to Reuters, plans to ban all petrol and diesel-fueled vehicles by 2030, officials announced Thursday. The controversial move follows Mayor Anne Hidalgo's plan to ban all diesel cars from the city by 2024, when Paris will host the Summer Olympics. Rumors have surfaced in recent months that the city would take measures to ban diesel vehicles prior to the 2024 games.

Paris City Hall unveiled its vision in a statement this week, the latest in a series of bold initiatives created to reduce carbon emissions.

Less than two weeks after Paris celebrated its third annual Day Without Cars, its mayor has decreed that the schedule for moving out fossil-fuel powered cars is moving up.

Paris has seen significant amounts of rising air pollution in the last few years.

It already has car-free days and car-free zones, while it also fines drivers who enter the city in vehicles over 20 years olds - moves that have attracted criticism in the past. Paris is already part of a group of cities that includes Madrid, Mexico City and Athens that plan to end the use of diesel-engined cars by 2025, collectively representing metropolises that are home to 42 million people.

Officers Down, Schools on Lockdown After North Carolina Prison Break
The Pasquotank County Sheriff's Department , along with the State Bureau of Investigation, are investigating the incident. Students were dismissed, but those who ride the bus were required to have a parent at home when the bus arrived.

Many Parisians do not own cars, relying on extensive public transport systems and, increasingly, fast-burgeoning networks offering bikes, scooters and low-pollution hybrid engine cars for shot-term rental.

France wants to ban internal combustion cars altogether by 2040.

While fossil fuel emissions affect all of France and, indeed, the whole planet, Paris is a hotspot for particle pollution.

However, Paris City Hall carefully avoided the word "ban" in the announcement and instead branded the timeline as a feasible phase-out period.
