Nifty zooms to all-time high 10167, Sensex rallies 250 points

Sensex opens higher by 65 points on firm Asian cues

The Nifty gained 71 points, or 0.7 per cent, to close at an all-time high of 10,167, surpassing its September 18 record. The gauge shot up 348 points on Thursday.

Investor sentiment received a boost on positive economic data after industrial production grew to a 9-month high of 4.3 per cent in August while retail inflation came in at 3.28 per cent in September, unchanged from August.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the BSE, too, witnessed a strong closing at 32,432.69 points - up 250.47 points, or 0.78 per cent, from its previous close - its highest level since August 1 when the Sensex closed at a high of 32,575.17 points.

According to official data released on Thursday, the IIP for August showed that factory output grew 4.3 per cent against the same month previous year, and September's CPI inflation remained static at 3.28 per cent as compared to August.

The wider 51-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was also trading 41.75 points or 0.41 per cent higher at 10,138.15 points.

For the week, Nifty and Sensex was up by 2% each.

Bank of America and Wells Fargo, scheduled to report on Friday, were also lower, dragging the financials index down 0.39 percent. Earnings per share rose about 15 percent to $1.42, bolstered by the bank's move to reduce its shares outstanding by 7 percent.

"The Indian rupee strengthened against the USA dollar to hit near three-week high".

On the currency front, the rupee strengthened by 15-16 paise to close at 64.93 against the United States dollar from its previous close at 65.08-09.

Although analysts believe the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will still keep rates steady in the coming months, they were quoted by Mint as saying that further signs of steady inflation would raise the odds of a rate cut.

The major European markets turned in a mixed performance on Thursday. The figure for August, earlier reported at 3.36%, was revised down to 3.28% as well. With this rally, investor wealth swelled to Rs 138.19 lakh crore. However, foreign portfolio investors gave up shares net Rs 668.13 crore, showed provisional data.

The top weekly Sensex gainers were: Bharti Airtel (up 12.86 per cent at Rs 431.45); Reliance Industries (up 4.76 per cent at Rs 876.70); TCS (up 4.74 per cent at Rs 2,561); Axis Bank (up 4.54 per cent at Rs 527.35); and Adani Ports (up 4.47 per cent at Rs 406.30).

Tata Steel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Coal India, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank had a field day, surging by up to 2.86 per cent.
