Site to get 'more aggressive' policing tweets — Twitter's Dorsey

Twitter's top executive appears to have gotten the message from the #WomenBoycottTwitter movement.

After catching heat for failing to address users' hate speech and harassment unleashed on Twitter, the social media giant's CEO Jack Dorsey said on Friday that Twitter would be taking more measures to prevent abusive and harassing content.

"We made a decision to take a more aggressive stance in our rules and how we enforce them", he wrote.

Dorsey said the "changes will start rolling out in the next few weeks".

Twitter did not immediately reply to CNNMoney's request for clarification. While McGowan's silencing may be a rallying moment for many white women, black women who face similar silencing and harassment on Twitter and other social media platforms every day have a different, though just as valid, perspective. The actress shared posts from other users who asserted her account was locked for speaking out against powerful male actors, such as Ben Affleck, in the wake of sexual harassment allegations surrounding Weinstein. In the case of McGowan, her Twitter account was suspended after she accused film producer Harvey Weinstein - which in turn caused a lot of outrage on the microblogging service. On Thursday she tweeted that "HW" raped me.

"We see voices being silenced on Twitter every day".

The hashtag #WomenBoycottTwitter has gained support from high-profile celebrities including Thor: Ragnarok star Mark Ruffalo and Chrissy Teigen. An individual's (mostly women) skin colour has become progressively more targeted in the recent years.

Twitter has attempted to respond before.

However, Dorsey acknowledged that the platform has not done enough to combat harassment. "We stand with the courageous women and men who use Twitter to share their stories, and will work hard every day to improve our processes to protect those voices". "We've been working to counteract this for the past 2 years", Dorsey tweeted. The verification policy tease was not part of his twitter thread.

"We're been working intensely over the past few months and focused today on making some critical decisions", Dorsey tweeted. We updated our policies and increased the size of our teams.
