Gurdaspur Bypoll Result Tomorrow Says Election Office

Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar was ahead of his BJP rival Swarn Salaria as the counting of votes polled in the October 11 by-election to the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency was underway on Sunday.

State Congress chief Sunil Jakhar, who trounced BJP's Swaran Salaria by almost 2 lakh votes, said it was a "referendum" on the NDA rule at the Centre.

The elections for the Gurdaspur seat were necessitated after the death of BJP MP Vinod Khanna in April this year.

Jakhar, who is the state Congress chief, said, "People of Gurdaspur have sent a strong message of their resentment to policies pursued by Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre".

In Gurdaspur bypoll results, Jakhar polled 4,99,752 votes, while BJP's Salaria polled 3,06,533, poll official said. Punjab BJP secretary Vineet Joshi and Salaria said, "They won by misusing the machinery". The defeat of the BJP in Gurdaspur will damage the prospects of the SAD-BJP alliance more than the AAP. "Everyone knows that even the sarpanches owing allegiance to the BJP and the SAD were warned that they will be dealt with strictly if the two allies got a lead in their respective areas in the by-poll".

On the other hand Aam Aadmi Party candidate Major General (Retd) Suresh Khajuria was at the third spot with only 23,579 votes.
