Runoff Increasingly Likely as Votes Counted in Liberian Election Reach 75%

Former global footballer George Weah and Liberia's Vice President Joseph Boakai will face a runoff for the presidency on November 7, the national election commission announced Sunday.

Weah received 39.2 percent of roughly 1.2 million ballots cast in almost three-quarters of polling stations, ahead of Boakai, who had 29.6 percent of the vote, the commission said.

Shittu, who spoke from Liberia, said the driving force of Weah's presidential ambition is the urge to serve.

The pair are well clear of the 18 other candidates, though longtime opposition leader Charles Brumskine took 9.7% of votes counted and Coca-Cola executive Alexander Cummings is on 6.9%, meaning the role of their supporters will be significant if a run-off is called. Prince Yormie Johnson of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) are trailing in third, fourth and fifth place, respectively, and will not be qualified to participate in the run-off as a candidate.

George Weah, a former football player and current senator and candidate of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) came ahead of his main opponent Boakai in the first round of the presidential elections.

8-year-old dies after falling from cruise ship in Miami
Carroll said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue originally received the call after 8 a.m. and Miami Fire Rescue responded to help. Control of the ship was returned to Carnival, and the investigation was continuing, police said.

The results of 1,232 polling units or 22.9 per cent of the total 5,390 polling units across the country were announced.

Brumskine has denounced the vote, claiming it was plagued by fraud and called for a new election though worldwide observers gave the poll a clean bill of health. Their accredited representatives may monitor the election to ensure that it is free, fair and transparent.

This step is to ensure the transparency of the process by allowing a party or a candidate representatives to observe the process of identification of the voter in the Final Registered Roll (FRR).

Official reports had shown that Weah was leading during the week.
