Trump Says Drug Czar Nominee Withdrew Name After Bombshell Report

Trump nominated Marino, a Republican, to lead the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, a position that is commonly referred to as the nation's "drug czar".

US President Donald Trump says his drug czar nominee has withdrawn, after he reportedly helped neuter government attempts to tackle the opioid crisis. He said Mr. Marino, a Republican from Pennsylvania, was a "fine man and a great Congressman!"

Marino, in his fourth term representing northeastern Pennsylvania, played a key role in the law's quick and quiet passage.

As reported in a withering investigation by "60 Minutes" and The Washington Post, published today on page A1, Marino sponsored the 2016 Ensuring Patient Access and Effective Drug Enforcement Act.

Meanwhile, political action committees representing the industry spent $106 million lobbying Congress between 2014 and 2016, the height of the epidemic, and contributed at least $1.5 million to the campaigns of 23 lawmakers who sponsored or cosponsored the bill, including almost $100,000 to Marino and $177,000 to Sen.

Riz MC Set to Play Hamlet in New Netflix Movie
The plan is for Ahmed to star as the tragic protagonist with Netflix financing and distributing. The actor is planning to do a contemporary version of Shakespear's classic, Hamlet .

Trump announced the withdrawal on Twitter a day after saying he would be "looking into" the damning report about Marino's cozy ties to drug companies.

Trump tweeted on Tuesday morning.

The bill, that was pushed primarily by Marino, effectively makes it impossible for the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to stop suspicious narcotic shipments from companies.

Since 1999, the rate of overdose deaths from opioids has more than quadrupled, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Trump has said he will officially declare the opioid crisis a "national emergency" but so far has not done so.
