Iran supreme leader Khamenei says Trump talking nonsense

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks with President Donald Trump prior to the President's departure from Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv

Ayatollah Khamenei said he welcomed expressions of support for the accord from European states but if the U.S. tore up the deal, Iran would "shred it to bits".

"It has always been our plan to develop our ties and relations with Europe within our values and beliefs", opined the Iranian official touching upon Iran-Europe relations after the landmark agreement of 2015, "However, the truth is that Europe has not done the same since the nuclear deal was signed".

Trump accuses Iran of supporting terrorism and says the 2015 deal does not do enough to block its path to acquiring nuclear weapons.

It was his first response to Trump´s bellicose speech last Friday in which he called for tougher sanctions to curb Iran´s "destabilising activities" in the Middle East.

Under the deal, Iran agreed to curb its disputed uranium enrichment program in return for relief from worldwide sanctions that crippled its economy, and United Nations nuclear inspectors have repeatedly certified Tehran's compliance with the terms. If that were to happen, the USA would in effect be in violation of the terms.

On Wednesday, an Twitter account attributed to Ayatollah Khamenei quoted him as telling students in Tehran that it was a "waste of time for anyone to answer" Mr Trump. Pouyanne has said Total would withdraw from Iran if obliged by law.

He further said that "West‎ has no right to ask why Iran is present in the region, or why Iran has missiles".

"They are angry because today the Islamic Republic has managed to foil their plots in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and the like", the Leader added.

"Or to ask why Iran has missiles - well, why do you have missiles?"

He called on Europe to actively oppose Mr Trump's position.

Senior officials in France, Britain and Germany have dismissed the United States president's approach to the JCPOA, saying they will continue to support the nuclear deal. "Why do YOU have nuclear weapons?"

Iran says the missiles it has tested are not created to carry nuclear warheads.
