FDA Issues Overdose Warning About Popular Halloween Candy

BY PIKALUK FROM UK

The FDA isn't suggesting ditching the candy all together, but is warning people to resist any kind of black licorice binging.

The agency's experts determined that the candy contains enough of the sweetening compound glycyrrhizin (yes, that's a real word) - derived from the licorice root - to significantly lower the body's potassium levels. It can cause potassium levels in the blood to fall.

- If you're planning to stash up on black licorice for Halloween, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning on Monday about possible risky side effects of the old-fashioned favorite. And, the link has been noted in several different medical journals over the years.

"Days before the biggest candy-eating holiday of the year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) encourages moderation if you enjoy snacking on the old-fashioned favorite".

Over 2M Copies Of Super Mario Odyssey Sold In Just 3 Days
The most popular one to date is Super Mario Run , which Nintendo recently announced has been downloaded over 200 million times. As for why this is, the blame might be on cost.

The FDA has posted its yearly reminder about the candy online. Limit black licorice to two ounces, that is about three one-inch pieces a day.

When it comes to candy preferences, black licorice might be just as divisive as candy corn. Many "licorice" or "licorice flavor" products manufactured in the United States do not contain any licorice. Contact your doctor if you have questions about possible interactions.

Irregular heartbeats - called arrhythmia - have been linked to the consumption of black licorice, and science points to the compound glycyrrhizin, which gives licorice its sweetness, as the culprit.

The FDA put out a festive video explaining the issue with licorice and "witching" you a Happy and safe Halloween. But if you do, this is important information to keep in mind.
