Sir Michael Fallon Has Just Resigned As Defence Secretary

Theresa May

Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon has resigned following allegations of past behaviour which he said may have "fallen short".

His decision came after it emerged that he put his hand on radio host Julia Hartley-Brewer's knee during a dinner 15 years ago.

MICHAEL FALLON has resigned as Defence Secretary tonight in the wake of the Westminster harassment scandal.

In a statement, he said:"In recent days allegations have been made about MPs' conduct, including my own".

Ms Hartley-Brewer said: "I have had no issues since with the man in question and do not regard the incident as anything but mildly amusing".

"I am very clear that we will take action against those where there are allegations that we see, and the evidence is there, that there has been misconduct", she told lawmakers.

"However, I don't think that is the reason".

Stephen Crabb, the former work and pensions secretary, apologized for sending explicit text messages to a 19-year-old woman hoping to get a job in his office in 2013.

Fallon added that he would still work hard as an MP for his Sevenoaks constituents.

In a letter to Fallon, May thanked him for "a long and impressive ministerial career".

"I appreciate the characteristically serious manner in which you have considered your position, and the particular example you wish to set to servicemen and women and others", Prime Minister Theresa May responded to the resignation.

"It should not impact the schedule" of meetings with United Kingdom representatives, a Pentagon spokesman said.

Fallon reportedly quit because he could not guarantee there would not be another story about allegedly inappropriate contact with a female journalist, according to HuffPost UK.
