Indian power plant blast death toll climbs to 29

15 labourers were dead and over 100 were injured after the steam pipe of a boiler burst at the thermal power plant of National Thermal Power Corporation in Unchahar

At least 26 workers have been killed and up to 100 have been injured in an explosion at a state-owned power station in northern India.

"Ten people have died and around 40 to 50 people are grievously injured".

Rescue work ended on Thursday and the National Thermal Power Corporation, which runs the plant, ordered an investigation.

Needless to say, grief has engulfed the families of the labourers who have lost their lives in the calamity and the dozens who have survived it, grappling with severe injuries. The injured are being treated at two hospitals including one within the NTPC campus.

Sabbir Enam, 31, was detained on Tuesday and formally arrested yesterday, a senior police official said.

Thornton Police have Walmart shooting suspect in custody
The man who Thornton police say allegedly opened fire on a group of people at a busy Walmart Wednesday evening is now in custody. Forty-eight witnesses were taken from the Walmart to a nearby police building where they were questioned and released.

"Ash had piled up in the furnace beneath the boiler, which then led to building up of pressure resulting in the explosion", Anand Kumar, a top state police official said.

As per the details, a boiler blasted in the newly installed power generating unit at the plant in Unchahar town of Raebareli city. The rescuers from national disaster response force (NDRF) and police are continuing search for the missing ones in the wake of the blast, police said Thursday. NTPC has shut the affected unit, while the rest of the plant is operating, it said in the statement.

About 150 workers were said to be present inside the plant when the blast took place.

"About 16 people are dead, and 90-100 people have been injured because of the blast", Arvind Kumar, Uttar Pradesh's top bureaucrat handling law and order, told Reuters.

"NTPC has initiated an inquiry into the incident".
