Trump's Anti-LGBT, Non-Scientist Pick for USDA Science Post Drops Out

USDA nominee Clovis was Trump adviser who encouraged Russia meeting report

A lawyer for Clovis, who is now a senior White House adviser to the Agriculture Department, did not respond to a request for comment.

George Stephanopoulos spent a few minutes on "Good Morning America" Tuesday morning with Jay Sekulow, a lawyer for President Donald Trump, talking about the various charges and deals in the Russian Federation investigation that came to light on Indictment Monday.

Clovis, who possesses a bachelor's degree in political science, an MBA degree and a doctorate in public administration, repeatedly acknowledged his lack of background in the hard sciences when responding to Sen.

Senator Al Franken, whose exchange with Sessions in January has prompted a continuing dispute, said in a letter to Sessions on Thursday that the Papadopoulos revelations are "another example in an alarming pattern in which you, the nation's top law enforcement officer, apparently failed to tell the truth, under oath, about the Trump team's contacts with agents of Russian Federation".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is facing renewed questions over how much he knew about Russian efforts to interfere with the USA election, after it was revealed this week that he attended meetings with a Trump campaign adviser who claimed to have extensive contacts with Russians.

But George Papadopoulos, a former Trump foreign policy adviser, pleaded guilty to making a false statement to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about trying to arrange a meeting between Russian officials and the Trump campaign.

"We respect Mr. Clovis's decision to withdraw his nomination", said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders. It was also fair to judge him based on comments he made regarding homosexuality, including that being gay is a choice and that legalizing same-sex marriage would lead to legalized pedophilia.

The development is the latest sign that Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into the Trump campaign and Russian collusion is impacting the day-to-day of Trump's administration, despite top White House aides - including Trump himself - claiming that the indictments of former top Trump campaign advisers Paul Manafort and Rick Gates had nothing to do with the administration or the campaign.

Black cab ploughs into crowd in London
Witness Ed Hoppitt posted: "Just came within meters of being hit by a vehicle that mounted the pavement and ploughed into people". The London Ambulance Service has crews at the scene, but have yet to release details of any casualties.

"I would encourage you" and another foreign policy adviser to the campaign to "make the trip, if it is feasible", Clovis wrote.

The White House did not comment Wednesday night, and messages to Clovis' attorney regarding the latest developments in the Russian Federation investigation were not returned.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters Tuesday that he's already "losing interest" in the investigation's developments "on the topic of how Donald Trump won the presidential elections", the Interfax news service reported. At least two Democratic members of the Senate judiciary committee, Al Franken of Minnesota and Patrick Leahy of Vermont, have asked the FBI to investigate whether Sessions committed perjury during his confirmation hearings. "It was the one time that group ever met", she said.

Russian Federation denies the allegations and Trump denies any collusion.

In a letter to Trump on Wednesday, Clovis said he was "eternally grateful and humbled" by the nomination but would like his name withdrawn. We can rejoice in the fact that he won't be chief scientist at USDA, but if Trump's nomination history tells us anything, it's that we might face an even worse pick going forward.

Clovis, a former conservative radio talk show host in Iowa who was a frequent guest on CNN during the election, became an early supporter of Trump's two years ago.

Stabenow's office noted in a news release, "The letter comes after new information surfaced this week from criminal filings that were released against former Trump campaign officials". Likewise, he called Obama a "Maoist" and said Attorney General Eric Holder is a "racist black".
