United Nations in PNG raises concerns about Manus Regional Processing Center

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull after a visit to Borough Market in central London

Turnbull is also expected to come under pressure when New Zealand's newly elected prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, pays a first official visit to Australia on Sunday.

The UNCT reminds the Government of Papua New Guinea and Australia of their obligations under International Human Rights and Refugee Laws which must be upheld in the implementation of plans to close the RPC.

The center on Manus Island was ruled "unconstitutional" by a court in PNG a year ago.

A spokesman for the Refugee Action Coalition said the Australian government was trying to force the refugees into "even more unsafe conditions".

"Australia deny to give our fundamental rights such as water and food", said Adam. There have been reports that men at the camp have been digging holes to find drinking water, with the United Nations calling the situation "a humanitarian emergency unfolding". They include Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar, Afghans, Iranians, Sri Lankans and other nationalities, and are nearly entirely men.

"We are asking New Zealand to seriously have negotiations with the Australian government to take us from this prison", he said.

Steinmeier, who is in the western city of Perth for a German-Australian business conference, said he had been assured that the government was looking at giving "better care and accommodation" to the refugees who have remained in the center.

She's expressed concerns about the Manus Island stand-off in which 600 refugees have barricaded themselves in the mothballed detention centre which closed on Tuesday. Below is a cartoon by Eaten Fish, who has been detained on Papua New Guinea for more than four years.

He said he then heard seven to eight shots and then police pointing a gun at a man kneeling on the pavement. At least two bodies could be seen lying motionless on the path beneath tarps near mangled bicycles.

"[The Prime Minister] should have the conversation and see if we can make this proposal work", Mr Shorten said.

"At the moment hundreds of naked men are lying around me", wrote Boochani.

"The men have said they fear they will be subjected to violence at the hands of locals if they leave the compound - and, given there have been violent incidents in the past, we believe these fears should be respected and satisfactorily addressed". "You can't keep political hostages".

Nicole Judge, who worked for the Salvation Army at the centre, said she had advocated for closing Manus Island but didn't want refugees and asylum seekers to be left there to suffer.

"I acknowledge that, while New Zealand has not had to contend with these issues on our shores, it's hard to ignore the human face of this situation and nor should it be ignored", Ardern wrote.

Last November, in the waning months of his term, President Barack Obama agreed to resettle up to 1,250 of the asylum-seekers on Manus and Nauru.

New Zealand says it will accept up to 150 refugees from the offshore detention centers, but Australia has repeatedly refused the offer.
