PlayStation Trophies Can Now Be Used To Buy Games (With A Catch)

PlayStation Reward Scheme Now Allows Players to Earn Points for Unlocking Trophies (US Only)

Video games are expensive, and even with subscription programs like Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus offering freebies, you might find yourself longing for that one game on your list.

You will have to play a lot, though.

However, now that PlayStation has announced that its Rewards program in the U.S. will take trophies into account, earning you PSN store credit for devoted play, the average player has a nice incentive to begin trophy hunting. A platinum trophy is worth 100 points; gold is worth 10 and silver is worth 1.

Earning 10 platinum trophies - typically obtained by earning every other trophy in a single game - will reward you with 1,000 points. So, this promotion won't exactly be earning you free games hand-over-fist, but it's something.

In its early stages, 1,000 points equates to a $10 discount voucher for the PS Store, but is now restricted to the United States for the time being. But again, none of this accrues until the user links their account to the service (so if you're a PlayStation Plus subscriber and haven't yet, that won't count).

Surprise! Apple's flagship iPhone X is the most breakable iPhone ever…
Do you buy accidental damage insurance on your smartphones? So, you might want to get a case for your iPhone X after all . Whether it's the iPhone 4 or the iPhone 5s , there is history in this company with cracked screens and higher fix costs.

The idea that they now have a material reward will perhaps coax the more casual players into keeping an eye on unlocks. Now, with Sony Rewards, earning trophies will let you rack up points to spend towards digital game discounts.

Register 5 eligible discs and get a free Sony movie code.

If you prefer to play on Microsoft's platforms, the company has a similar system, as well.

When the news first began to spread about the update to the Sony Rewards program, someone pointed it out to Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, on Twitter and he mentioned how it sounds like a cool feature.
