Cutting back on alcohol can prevent cancers

That report analyzed 119 studies, including data on 12 million women and over a quarter of a million breast cancer cases, and concluded there was strong evidence that alcohol consumption increases the risk of both pre- and postmenopausal cancer, and that drinking a small glass of wine or beer every day - about 10 grams of alcohol - increases premenopausal breast cancer risk by 5 percent and postmenopausal risk by 9 percent. Research highlighted by the National Cancer Institute suggests that the more alcohol you drink - particularly the more you drink regularly - the higher your risk of developing cancer.

LoConte also told the Times people who do drink alcohol don't have to totally stop, although that'd be the smartest move, but that "If you want to reduce your cancer risk, drink less".

As of 2013, about 73 per cent of Americans reported consuming alcohol, and almost 13 per cent described their consumption habits as binge drinking, according to a survey published in JAMA Psychiatry in August.

The doctors' group is also calling for new public health initiatives to curb alcohol use, from taxes to restrictions on ads targeting minors, like the new ban on alcohol advertising on New York City's subways and buses slated to go into effect in January.

"We chose to push this out because.we were looking over our portfolio of various statements on primary prevention of cancer and we realized that we did not have a statement on alcohol", Noelle LoConte, a representative of ASCO, told International Business Times Tuesday. Although the greatest risks were found in heavy drinkers, some risks were also observed in moderate drinkers. And for many, it may be a surprising number-5-6% of new cancers and cancer deaths around the world are directly caused by alcohol consumption of any volume, according to the evidence gathered by ASCO.

Malcolm Turnbull announces new plan to solve citizenship debacle

Alcohol is classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Cancer Research.

One of the biggest problems with the findings is the reality that most people just don't see drinking as a cancer or major health risk factor unless it's truly out of control.

Ashton said that moderate alcohol consumption is defined as up to an average of one drink a day for women (or seven drinks per week) and two drinks a day for men (or 14 drinks a week). This knowledge empowers doctors "to help their patients reduce their risk of cancer".

The group warns that heavy drinkers have an increased risk of developing liver cancer, mouth cancer, throat cancer, colorectal cancers and cancer of the voicebox.

"That puts some weight behind this", she said. "And in female breast cancer, (alcohol) affects the levels of female hormones in the body, and by adjusting the levels of estrogen in particular, it increases risk of breast cancer".
