Pokemon Go Developer Niantic Reportedly Making Harry Potter Game

Last year, Niantic introduced Pokémon GO, an augmented reality (AR) game for Android and iOS that let players walk around town catching Pokémon. According to a new report from TechCrunch, a new mobile game called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, which is co-developed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's Portkey Games, a new games label dedicated to creating video game and mobile experiences inspired by J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World.

An exact release date has not yet been set, but the creators promise more information will be forthcoming about Harry Potter: Wizards Unite in 2018. The article speculates that the Harry Potter game might share some gameplay elements and features from Niantic's first mobile AR title, the scifi-themed Ingress.

Niantic is working with both Warner Bros.

There is now no release date or launch window given, but there is an official website live that you can visit right here. Stay tuned to our social channels for updates as we work to bring this game to life.

The answer to those questions may very well determine the long-term health of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, but you have to believe that the app's short-term prospects are quite good.

Little is now known about the game, but it's expected to rely heavily on augmented reality technology, as Pokemon Go does. "And we weren't as communicative and open in the beginning [of Pokémon Go] because that was sort of a new process for our partners", Hanke told The Verge in July. This game will rely on the Ingress ecosystem, just as Pokemon GO did and does. They use Augmented Reality to overlay graphics on real-world locations, encouraging players to walk their neighborhood to reveal new secrets. We have many questions, and as soon as we get our hands on some footage or a trailer, we'll share that with you straight away.
