Send your nude images to Facebook to stop revenge porn

Facebook suggests users upload nudes to avoid revenge porn

You send the nude to yourself in Messenger, and Facebook creates a hashed digital fingerprint of the photo - an encrypted version of the raw data in the image file. The company is testing a program in Australia that would mark each picture as non-consensual explicit material. Any intimate photos that are posted and flagged on Facebook or Instagram will automatically be marked to prevent future postings of those images.

Social media giant Facebook has joined hands with an Australian government agency to fight "image-based abuse", commonly known as "revenge porn".

Revenge porn has been a bit of an issue in recent years, as people send intimate images and media to each other while in relationships, which then can be used as a tool of revenge (hence the name) against the other party when the relationship goes sour.

But can you trust Facebook?

My guess is that Facebook will tightly control who in the company can review and access submitted images, and that they will be blurred to protect people's privacy, before they are converted into "fingerprints" and then permanently wiped.

"The likelihood of Facebook being compromised is slim of course, but if the user was tricked into sending them to a third party - that could open them up for further abuse", he told Infosecurity.

In other words, if an image has been taken down and someone tries to re-post or re-share it on Facebook, Instagram or Messenger, the person will see a pop-up that says the photo violates Facebook's policies, according to Tech Crunch.

PixabayHow does this anti Revenge Porn tool work?

Oddly enough, news of this new pilot program comes on the heels of Australian singer Sia taking a similar gambit to ward off greedy paparazzi.

Earlier this year, Facebook implemented a photo-matching tool in the United States to stop sharing of content tagged as revenge porn in the past.

"Revenge porn is a huge problem and Facebook could be held liable for it, so they are trying to do something". "So if somebody tried to upload that same image, which would have the same digital footprint or hash value, it will be prevented from being uploaded", Julie Inman Grant of eSafety commission told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

That way, your photo will never show up on any of Facebook's servers. Nonetheless, Alex Stamos, Facebook chief security officer, said the company was improving its software in order to prevent such circumvention.
