Facebook urges users to send nude pics to combat revenge porn

Facebook is asking some users to send nude photos of themselves in an effort to combat social media "revenge porn". If the program works, it would mean that same naked picture will never show up on Facebook, even if a hacker or an ex tries to upload it.

In a trial in Australia, Facebook asked people anxious that their intimate pictures might be posted by an ex partner to provide the images to Facebook, so that it knows to prevent them being uploaded in future.

Facebook claims it won't store the images, but rather a "hash system" that would allow their algorithm to recognize similar pictures without holding them on their servers.

"Yes, they're not storing a copy, but the image is still being transmitted and processed".

Minnesota Vikings activate QB Teddy Bridgewater
Zimmer declined to speculate about when Bridgewater might become the starter again. "He's moved well, thrown the ball well". Griffen stretched with the team at the start of practice Wednesday, wearing a stocking cap rather than a helmet.

There are fears the images could be found before being deleted, intercepted on their way to Facebook, or people could get around the technology by simply resizing images. Adults who have shared nude or sexually explicit photos with someone online, and who are anxious about unauthorised distribution, can report images to the Australian government's eSafety Commission.

Australian eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said the initiative " aims to empower Australians to stop image-based abuse in its tracks". While Facebook originally announced these plans in April, the pilot program is now underway.

Turns out, before the image can be "hashed", an actual human at Facebook has to look at it to make sure it "fits the definition of revenge porn".

The unorthodox scheme is now being tested among Facebook's Australian users, but Britain, Canada and the United States are also expected to take part in the project. "It removes control and power from the perpetrator who is ostensibly trying to amplify the humiliation of the victim amongst friends, family and colleagues", she said.
