Packers release Martellus Bennett, claim he failed to disclose medical condition

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Bennett is now dealing with a shoulder injury and head coach Mike McCarthy said the tight end won't play Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

The Packers have cut tight veteran tight end Martellus Bennett with a Failure to Disclose Physical Condition designation, reports ESPN's Field Yates. Then, one week ago, Bennett mysteriously missed practice with a shoulder injury. The Packers had signed Bennett to a three-year, $21 million deal in March.

The Packers have two other tight ends on the roster in Lance Kendricks and Richard Rodgers. At 4-4, Green Bay is in the middle of a playoff race, and if the team thought Bennett could help secure a postseason spot, it probably would not have let him go for a few million dollars in savings.

"I know he was in here yesterday, there's a number of opinions that he's working through, he met with our medical staff yesterday, so they're still going through the process, but he will be out against Chicago", McCarthy said before Wednesday's practice.

He didn't play in the 30-17 loss on Monday to the Detroit Lions after being listed as doubtful for the game.

Roy Halladay's plane captured on cell phone video just before crash
Halladay pitched a ideal game and a no-hitter in his first postseason start in the same year after coming to the Phillies in 2010. Wednesday to talk about former star pitcher Roy Halladay , who passed away Wednesday in a plane crash at 40-years-old.

He had just 24 catches for 233 yards and no touchdowns in this his first season for Green Bay.

Asked about his sudden desire to leave the game, Bennett was even more vague. They gave him a $6.3 million signing bonus.

Bennett is subject to waivers, so any team can put a claim in on him before 3 p.m. today. If he does not get claimed, he becomes a free agent and can sign with any team at any time after that.

He is the brother of Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett.
