Disney Confirms New "Star Wars" Trilogy With Rian Johnson

Star Wars Battlefront 2 The Last Jedi DLC season details

In 2015, the Star Wars franchise returning to theaters with its long-awaited seventh episode, The Force Awakens.

For Kennedy, the move looks to bring stability to the franchise's directing chair after the very public firings of "Star Wars" franchise directors Colin Trevorrow (who was replaced by J.J. Abrams) and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (who were replaced by Ron Howard). If your anticipation for The Last Jedi wasn't already at a fever pitch, the confirmation the studio is making Johnson the custodian of Star Wars' future is all you needed to hear.

Disney shares rose more than 1 percent after Chief Executive Bob Iger said Disney had struck a deal with Rian Johnson, director of upcoming film "Star Wars: The Last Jedi", to create a new trilogy in the blockbuster science fiction series. Lucasfilm's president Kathleen Kennedy said in helming The Last Jedi, the director has proven that his vision is exactly what Disney wants moving forward. "Rian will do incredible things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy", Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said in a statement.
