Disney to charge less than Netflix for its streaming service

Star Wars Obi Wan Kenobi movie

Lucasfilm announced plans for a new movie trilogy with Rian Johnson late Thursday, but we'll soon have even more Star Wars to look forward to. And, if you listened closely, you would have heard a new Marvel project is underway too.

Sadly, what we don't yet know is whether or not this service will be offered to cord cutters or those with existing cable packages.

During an earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that a new live action Star Wars TV series is being developed. According to Variety, Iger has said that Disney is now working on shows based on Monsters Inc., High School Musical, as well as a new series from Marvel.

What realm of Marvel will this future show possibly explore?

Speaking of spending though, Disney shockingly doesn't want us to do that much of it. Iger also revealed that Disney's new service will be priced "substantially below" Netflix, at least when it initially launches.

"Think about it like you think about our theme parks", said Iger, "where they are Disney parks, but you go in and you see Marvel and Star Wars and Pixar, for instance". The House of Mouse will also develop an original live-action Star Wars TV series for its direct-to-consumer SVOD service.

EPA approves bacteria-infected mosquitoes to fight Zika
To tackle the mosquito-problem, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved the release of lab-reared mosquitoes . The country has allowed large-scale releases of such mosquitoes in response to an epidemic of the Zika virus that began in 2015.

Iger also said that original programming from other sources may be licensed for the streaming service, which is set to be cheaper than Netflix's current $11 a month cost.

Iger spoke at length about the streaming service, which still doesn't have an official name, during an investor's call. If you pay for cable, do you get to watch shows on ABC's site like you can now, or will they only live on Disney's streaming service?

Disney reported earnings that fell short of expectations, sending the stock down after hours Thursday. It is expected that all Disney content, including releases from Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar, will eventually disappear from Netflix and be exclusively available to stream on the new platform. All are set for the streaming service, which is due to debut online in 2019.

Netflix should be anxious here, as another streaming service means they're not only going to lose all Disney-owned titles, they'll also be battling another platform for new content.

The service will launch in the US.
