Facebook founding president Sean Parker warns of social media's vices

First Facebook president says it is designed to psychologically exploit people and Zuckerberg knows

Parker also said, 'God only knows what it's doing to our children's brains'.

It puts users under a "social-validation feedback loop", said Parker, something that "a hacker like myself would come up with".

FACEBOOK'S first president has said he and Mark Zuckerberg created a monster by "exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology".

Parker added that the social networks' creators, including Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram's Kevin Systrom, "consciously" understood the implications of trying to keep users hooked on their products.

Napster founder and former Facebook president Sean Parker gestures during the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, California October 17, 2011.

"And we did it anyway", he said, according to a transcript of the interview.

In comments that strongly echo a recent Alphr interview with the inventor of the Facebook Like button - Justin Rosenstein - Parker admitted there is a gulf in the social network's initial aims and the "unintended consequences" we are faced with today. It's not the first time a tech entrepreneur has disavowed something they've created or been involved with - Programmer Ethan Zuckerman famously penned an apology letter for unleashing pop-up ads into the world several years ago.

With all of these highly-revealing comments now available to the public, he joked that Zuckerberg will probably suspend his Facebook account.

"It probably interferes with productivity in weird ways", he continued.

Sean Parker, who played a pivotal role in turning Facebook into a money-minting juggernaut, admits that he is now "something of a conscientious objector" to the social-networking giant.

Though primarily a social networking site, Facebook has acquired huge influence as an advertising platform, entertainment source, and communications channel. So as to get people spending more time on these social networks.

"And I would say, okay".

"And then they would say, 'No, no, no".

Parker said he would tell early holdouts to the platform that "we'll get you eventually".

Parker resigned as president in 2005 following his arrest on suspicion of drug possession when his holiday home was raided by police and cocaine was found.
