Air traffic controller charged with having weapon of mass destruction in Charlotte

US Airways jets are parked at their gates at the Charlotte Douglas International airport in Charlotte N.C

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents confirmed Paul Dandan, 30, was taken into custody Friday at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport and charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction. Dandan was charged with one count each of possession of a weapon of mass destruction, acquiring a weapon of mass destruction and transport of a weapon of mass destruction.

Responding officers subsequently found a pipe bomb in a residence shared by Mr. Dandan, 30, and his roommate, Derrick Fells, roughly 7 miles north of the Charlotte airport, the local NBC affiliate reported Friday. That weapon was a homemade pipe bomb, authorities said. WNCN reports that the FAA has suspended Dandan's access to the airport while the FAA and the FBI are investigating the case.

The investigation led police to another man, Derrick Fells, 39, who, they say, created the device.

Paul George Dandan, 30, was arrested Friday, a week after police received a 911 call about a person with a bomb and went to his house in Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Fells had created a pipe bomb that he meant to use on a neighbor whom he was feuding with. "He did not have access to any aircraft at the airport".

CBFC chairperson Parsoon Joshi said that an individual point of view does not change the collective view of an organization. But he even mentioned that the sentiments of the communities will also be taken care.

In 2015, Dandan was charged with and pleaded guilty to assault on a female, court records show.

WBTV reports that Fells told police that he made the explosive "to use it against a neighbor". The suspect was working at Charlotte Douglas International Airport during the time of his arrest.

The FAA said Friday night that Dandan had been fired and his access to the airport terminated.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) addressed the threat in a statement, saying Dandan, "only had access to the offsite Air Traffic Control Tower and had no access to the restricted areas of the terminal or ramp". After ultimately deciding not to use the bomb, he allegedly gave it to Dandan.
