Google Chrome Update To Eliminate Unexpected Redirects

This will keep the user on the page they were reading, and prevent any surprising redirects, Ryan Schoen, product manager at Google, wrote in a blog post.

It's a major problem, and Google says 20 per cent of feedback reports it receives from Chrome users on desktop include complaints about encountering unwanted content. Google says that it has found that these redirects often come from third-party content embedded in the offending web pages and isn't an action that the website author wanted to happen. Chrome will now block those redirect attempts and will show that a redirect was attempted and prevented in an infobar, an example of which you can see in the image below.

Unexpected page navigation. Chrome users tell Google that they will sometimes be viewing a web page and have the browser suddenly navigate to a new page for seemingly no reason.

Starting with Chrome 65, this type of behavior will also be curbed by Chrome. "This is effectively a circumvention of Chrome's pop-up blocker, one of users' favorite features".

Honor our veterans today and every day
Help by supporting local veterans organizations, which provide tremendous support for and advocacy on behalf of veterans. A visit to the Fallon County Veterans Memorial in the city park is another way to acknowledge Veterans Day.

Once Chrome 65 is release it will be able to detect this behavior, trigger an information bar, and prevent the main tab from being redirected.

Finally, Google will penalize websites that open new windows when visitors click on invisible overlays or advertising links disguised as buttons.

Secondly, Google is set to block a redirection that brings an unwanted page alongside opening the desired destination in a new tab. To help site owners ensure that their websites won't be blocked from opening content in new tabs or windows, Google has released the Abusive Experiences Report. Though these new updates aren't part of that initiative (there's still no date on when the ad blocker will be released), they serve much the same function, making sure that some of the web's worst ad offenders don't frustrate or take advantage of users. You just need to go to "chrome://flags/#enable-framebusting-needs-sameorigin-or-usergesture" from the address bar of your Chrome browser and then enable the option called "Framebusting requires same-origin or a user gesture".

Many users have reported about two types of "abusive experiences" where a deceptive site control appears to do one thing, but has a different behaviour when clicked. Abusive experiences left unaddressed for 30 days will trigger the prevention of new windows and tabs, Schoen wrote.
