Rupert Murdoch twice discussed CNN with AT&T CEO

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said he "didn't make that decision - it was made by a man who's a very respected person, a very, very respected person".

Representatives of Twenty-First Century Fox, AT&T and Time Warner, CNN's parent, declined comment.

Justice Department staff recommended that AT&T sell either its DirecTV unit or Time Warner's Turner Broadcasting unit, which includes news company CNN, a government official told Reuters on Thursday, on the grounds that a combined company would raise costs for rival entertainment distributors and stifle innovation.

Earlier this week reports emerged that AT&T offered to divest just CNN but the US Justice Department rejected the offer, according to Reuters.

AT&T's pending acquisition of Time Warner, an $85 billion media deal that could shake up how Americans watch TV, is being held up by the government.

This week, Delrahim and other agency officials told AT&T that the deal as it now stands raises anti-competition concerns, and that the company will need to shed some assets, perhaps either Turner or DirecTV. The move is likely to draw criticism and could be seen as political payback, since US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized CNN for its coverage of him, calling it "fake news".

"I did make a comment in the past as to what I think", Trump said. "I do feel you should have as many news outlets as you can-especially since so many are fake". The Wall Street Journal has revealed that Kushner was particularly very annoyed with the cable news agency's "fact-checking" during the presidential campaign. The White House has said Trump has not spoken to the attorney general about the matter.

Delrahim has said he was never given instructions by the White House on how to conduct his analysis. "DOJ will say, 'Hey, we are a strong cop on the beat.' And everyone walks away happy".
