Compensation committee to talk Roger Goodell contract

Roger Goodell, the NFL's commissioner, has chosen to allow the protests to continue and to not take any action against players, but recently it seems that decision could be costing him.

The alleged details come out one day before the committee will hold a conference call to try to finalize the Goodell extension, which Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been adamantly against, to the tune of threatening the National Football League with litigation.

Jerry has been heated with Goodell ever since he came after Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott, who is now serving his 6-game suspension, and he has plans to overthrow the current commissioner because of that and because he has done nothing towards making players stand for the National Anthem. According to a source familiar with the negotiations, Goodell has not budged from an offer he submitted around August 1 in which he asks for $49.5 million per year, the lifetime use of a private jet and lifetime health insurance for his family (cue the players' fury). "It's offensive. It's unseemly".

According to ESPN, Roger Goodell now makes $30 million per year.

Blank removed Jones as an "ad hoc" member of the compensation committee after Jones threatened to sue the league over a possible extension for Goodell.

One NFL owner said that there are "several owners in this league who don't make $40 million a year".

While executive vice president of communications Joe Lockhart denied the exact figure, the ESPN source said Goodell is standing firm on his demands. The sources suggest that "at best" Jones has maybe three other owners in his corner that Goodell should go, but is nowhere close to the 24 votes required to derail a process that is in essence already completed (pending just a formal signing and announcement, sources said). As his 28-year ownership history shows, he is not afraid of taking an unpopular stand-and of angering his peers-when he feels he is right. "He has said he's committed to it". It doesn't seem that Goodell is going to walk away willingly either. Despite no criminal conviction Goodell suspended Elliot for six games for breaking the NFL's personal conduct policy. The committee has found consistent support for a new Goodell deal.

"The problem is, no one is talking about games anymore", said one owner. "It's about concussions, Jones vs. Goodell, Zeke, the anthem".
