The U.S. Public Interest Research Group (USPIRG) and the Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group (MASSPIRG) issued a warning to parents Thursday that fidget spinners being sold at Target stores nationwide were found to have high levels of lead.

The US Public Interest Research Group, which produces an annual report about unsafe toys, released data on two fidget spinners sold at Target stores - the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass and the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal - on Thursday, saying that both gadgets contained excessive lead levels.

For the "Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass", the center circle tested for 33,000 ppm of lead, and the arm tested for 22,000 ppm of lead.

USA Today said the company could not provide an estimate on how numerous popular fidget spinner toys it will have to remove from stores. The "Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal" tested at 1,300 parts per million. One of the two models was found to have 330 times the amount of lead allowed in children's products.

However, when TexPIRG Education Fund reached out to Target, Bulls i Toy and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) with the results, all three noted fidget spinners are labeled as general use products, and are not subject to the same standards as children's products.

Uber loses appeal in landmark United Kingdom case over its drivers' employment rights
But Uber drivers shouldn't get too excited about the prospect of receiving standard worker benefits just yet. Jennings added: "They've achieved market dominance at the expense of drivers.

A Target spokeswoman told ABC News she thought the spinners were "primarily" sold in the front of stores. But, after the company reviewed the products, it made a decision to pull them anyway.

U.S. PIRG argued that though the fidget spinners were marketed for people 14 or older, Target also said on its website that it was available for children 6 or older.

The manufacturer of the specific model, Bulls-I-Toy, wrote in a statement: "There are no mandatory CPSC requirements for it".

Two of those came back with high levels of lead. In 2006, CPSC and Reebok recalled metal bracelets after a 4-year-old Minneapolis boy died of acute lead poisoning after swallowing a metal charm from the item.

"Even small amounts of lead in toys can be ingested when transferred from fingers to mouth or from fingers to food", U.S. PIRG quotes a national lead expert Helen Binns, M.D., pediatrician at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, as having said. It's also calling on children and adults to stop using the toys.
