Red Sox Trade Talks Over Giancarlo Stanton 'Heating Up,' Report Says

But MLB Network's Jon Morosi on Friday reported that the Marlins finally have kicked the tires on a potential Stanton trade.

According to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, the Red Sox have growing interest in Marlins' slugger Giancarlo Stanton.

Given the Red Sox' need for at least one more slugger, it would amount to professional malpractice for Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski not to perform due diligence for the Red Sox and explore the trade fully.

That the Red Sox are in the early stages of discussions with the Marlins about a Stanton trade makes sense but significant hurdles remain in place and it would be premature to place too much significance on what "heating up" means.

Mom's blog posts on fidget spinners' lead levels caught safety group's attention
The manufacturer of the specific model, Bulls-I-Toy, wrote in a statement: "There are no mandatory CPSC requirements for it". A Target spokeswoman told ABC News she thought the spinners were "primarily" sold in the front of stores.

Stanton, 27, has 3 more seasons before he can opt out of his deal with the Marlins, making $77 million in that time. The Red Sox, of course, are just one of many teams interested in acquiring the reigning Major League Baseball home run king, with the Cardinals, Phillies and Giants already known to have had preliminary talks with the Marlins. While any team would love to have Stanton, the 13-year, $325 million extension he signed in 2014 obviously complicates things. The teams involved were the Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, and the Philadelphia Phillies.

While Stanton hit.281 with a whopping 59 home runs and 132 RBI a year ago, Heyman notes that the Red Sox may prefer to sign someone like free agent outfielder J.D. Martinez, who hit 45 homers in just 119 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season.

The Red Sox have other options than Stanton.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, are prepared to increase payroll, even to the point of exceeding the luxury tax threshold.
