Colin Kaepernick hasn't played a single game this National Football League season, but the quarterback earned a highly coveted accolade away from the field as one of GQ's people of the year, the magazine announced Monday.
Being dubbed this generation's iconic civil rights leader by legendary Olympian John Carlos, who is known for raising his fist in protest during the 1968 Olympics, Kaepernick makes a strong statement on the magazine's cover.
There are some who share GQ's opinion that Kaepernick would've been picked up had he not begun the protest.
Ninety-year-old singer and activist Harry Belafonte says seeing people like Kaepernick taking action is "the greatest reward" he could ask for. "It cost him his job", the article reads.
The editors wrote that his act of kneeling during the National Anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality earned him the honor. He posted a message on Twitter, saying he was "honoured' by the recognition".

He was intitally backed by his team, the San Francisco 49ers, but faced a barrage of abuse and criticism, including comments from then presidential hopeful Donald Trump.
The interview runs in the December 2017 issue of GQ.
Brushing aside the issue of racism, Trump, the current U.S. president, told Kaepernick in August 2016 to "find a country that works better for him".
The magazine 's story includes comments from several of Kaepernick's supporters and confidants.
