"It's deeply disturbing to see hate crimes increase for the second year in a row", said Jonathan Greenblatt, national director and CEO of the Anti-Defamation League.

There were 6,121 reported hate crimes in the USA in 2016, according to new Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics.

Six hate crimes were related to religion, while five were associated with sexual orientation. In 2015 and 2016, that number was driven by crimes against people due to their race or ethnicity. Wisconsin reported 34 hate crimes previous year.

Some civil rights groups caution that the FBI's annual figures are artificially low because they rely on voluntary reporting. But the number of anti-black crimes remained about even with the number reported in 2015. About half of those incidents were motivated by race, the agency says. There were 4,029 single-bias incidents that targeted "Race/Ethnicity/Ancestry" in 2015, compared to 4,229 in 2016.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the task force he appointed on crime reduction is exploring ways to revise training for police and prosecutors, and to improve data collection on hate crimes.

'The Department of Justice is committed to ensuring that individuals can live without fear of being a victim of violent crime based on who they are, what they believe, or how they worship, ' he said in response to the FBI's report.

In short, hate crimes can and do happen just about anywhere.

Of those crimes past year, 25 were motivated by race, two by religion, and 12 by sexual orientation. In 2015, this number was 734, indicating a 19.34 percent increase. Anti-Jewish hate crimes, anti-Islamic hate crimes, and anti-Catholic hate crimes all saw various increases in 2016.

Anti-Catholic crimes also increased by 9 incidents. Anti-Black hate crimes actually declined by three offenses. Crimes motivated by gender identity-bias accounted for 124 incidents.
