Palace insists no mention of human rights topic in Duterte-Trump meet

U.S. President Donald Trump left talks with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte during the gala dinner marking ASEAN's 50th anniversary in Manila Philippines

As US President Donald Trump prepares to meet leaders at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in the Philippines capital of Manila on 12 and 13 November 2017, Amnesty is calling on him to condemn President Duterte's murderous "war on drugs", and push him to investigate the unlawful killing of thousands of people around the country.

Ahead of the talks, Phelim Kine, deputy director of Human Rights Watch's Asia division, told the New York Times he predicted the world would likely "see an alpha-male bromance between the two..."

"(They) should deny the architect of this human rights calamity the worldwide recognition he undeservedly craves".

During the bilateral meeting, Trump cited the "great relationship" between the United States and the Philippines and thanked the host country for "the great treatment you have given us".

He said what took place was a "rather lengthy discussion" of the Philippines' war on drugs "with President Duterte doing most of the explaining".

Duterte sang a duet of the song "Ikaw" with singer Pilita Corrales during Sunday night's gala dinner at the summit in Manila. "It was President Duterte who brought up with President Trump the drug menace in the Philippines, and the U.S. president appeared sympathetic and did not have any official position on the matter but was merely nodding his head".

Highlights have included a handshake with Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that left him rolling his eyes (and another that was all fingers) - a white-knuckle exchange with French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin using his left arm to stop Trump pulling him in.

Trump says Modi has "become a friend of ours" and praising the Indian leader during their one-on-one meeting.

Trump was expected to attend a dinner with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at the end of the day.

The president met with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte (doo-TEHR'-tay), who has been condemned by human rights groups for his crackdown on drug dealers and users.
