Thousand-dollar iPhone X security wrecked by '$150 3D-printed mask'

Apple CEO Tim Cook holds an iPad during a presentation at Apple headquarters in Cupertino California

But by sculpting and shading the false nose on one side to imitate shadow - plus a few other tweaks - the team managed to use the mask to fool the iPhone X into unlocking, it is claimed. Facial recognition has shown its pitfalls in the past, with hackers tricking security by putting a photo over the camera.

They said: " Potential targets shall not be regular users, but billionaires, leaders of major corporations, nation leaders and agents like Federal Bureau of Investigation need to understand the Face ID's issue [sic].

Apple said that its Face ID will continually learn by constantly taking selfies of its owner to create a very detailed profile.

On its website, Bkav says it made the mask with two- and three-dimensional printers, silicone and "hand-made" skin to "trick Apple's AI". However, we knew about this "learning", thus, to give a more persuasive result, we applied the strict rule of "absolutely no passcode" when crafting the mask.

Vodafone, Idea to sell mobile-towers to ATC for Rs. 7850cr
Accordingly, private equity funds KKR and Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) had emerged as the top contenders. The sale of tower business is subject to regulatory and other approvals.

Expect Apple to issue an update for the Face ID software or new generations of the iPhone with hardware created to block these circumvention techniques.

While it depends on the user to fall for this yet another "convenient" at the risk of potentially being tracked by advertisers, the latest research from Bkav suggests that Face ID isn't even secure enough to be used as an authentication process. Apparently, Apple worked with skilled mask makers in Hollywood to ensure the new technology could not be hacked, where they have been proven wrong. Apple points out that it uses infrared sensors and mapping dots to scan for 3D images. "These are actual masks used by the engineering team to train the neural network to protect against them in Face ID". The iPhone X, which became available November 3, has numerous other security functions that would make most such hacks impractical for all but the most dedicated criminals, and perhaps still unachievable, those experts said.

After proving in 2008 that facial recognition was not an effective security measure for laptops, a Ha Noi software security firm has shown that Apple's claims of it being a robust method of securing your new $1,000 iPhone X is not exactly accurate. "If convenience is more important, Face ID may be your choice". However, more people are starting to use 3D printing to get past security measures, from 3D printed fingerprints and keys to cracking a safe, so using a 3D printed mask to fool facial recognition software definitely doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility.

Still, the average iPhone X users shouldn't worry about this trick being used against them.
