Allen County Public Health supports antibiotic awareness

Antibiotic apocalypse~II

"Not only that, by using antibiotic treatment unnecessarily, other bacteria in the environment as well as the "healthy" bacteria in the body gets the opportunity to develop resistance due to exposure, which can potentially cause antibiotic resistant infections later on", says Soko. We remind our Nation's medical professionals, veterinarians, and researchers to learn about the appropriate prescribing and use of antibiotics, and remind them of their role in helping patients use antibiotics appropriately so that we can better combat this emerging health concern.

Councillor Sweet added: "In addition, people take antibiotics for mild infections when they don't need to".

Suzanne Dougherty, executive vice president of the American Association of Avian Pathologists, noted that most of the antibiotics used in poultry are ionophores, which are not considered by FDA or World Health Organization to be medically important to humans. As a result, many infections have become increasingly hard to cure-making millions of Americans sick and causing tens of thousands of deaths in the United States each year. This occurs when bacteria doesn't respond to the drugs created to kill them and it is one of the most urgent threats to the public's health.

"What we want them to realize that antibiotics only work on certain bacteria, not all bacteria you need an antibiotic for", said Deb Roberts, director of nursing for Allen County Public Health.

"There are very few new antibiotics in the development pipeline".

Goodwin Lost Infant Daughter Hours Before 49ers Win
Goodwin scored a touchdown for the 49rs just hours later, blowing a kiss to the sky before collapsing in the end zone . Goodwin was one of three National Football League players who took a knee to protest during Veterans Day weekend.

"Without urgent action from all of us, common infections, minor injuries and routine operations will become much riskier". This stewardship helps to fight resistance because it preserves the usefulness of antibiotics.

"It is important for people to understand that if they are feeling under the weather and see their GP or a nurse, antibiotics may not be prescribed if they are not effective for their condition, but they should expect to have a full discussion about how to manage their symptoms".

Taking antibiotics when they are not needed or worse, taking the wrong antibiotic reduces their effectiveness.

Professor Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer, comments: "Without effective antibiotics, minor infections could become deadly and many medical advances could be at risk; surgery, chemotherapy and caesareans could become simply too unsafe".

Staff and students will be able to surrender their unused or out of date antibiotics for safe disposal at the Sherfield Building on South Kensington campus and the Commonwealth Building at Hammersmith, between 12:00-13:30.
