British surfer fends off shark with a punch

Surfer 'punched shark in face' as he was being attacked

Mr Fry told The Daily Telegraph he felt something hit his right shoulder, and turned to look just moments before the predator sunk its teeth into him.

"I got back on my board, shouted at my friends who were there and then managed to catch a wave..."

"So it was a bit of a close call".

A British doctor on Tuesday said that he escaped a shark by punching it in the face after the animal tried to attack him in Australia.

'Geez I don't know if I can tell mum, she might kill me, ' he said.

Fry said he had been inspired by surfer Mick Fanning, who famously fended off a shark during a competition in 2015.

"So when it happened, I was like: 'Just do what Mick did".

"If you are watching or listening, Mick, I owe you a beer, thank you very much".

Mr Fry wasn't seriously injured and only suffered bite marks to his shoulder and arm.

Avoca and North Avoca beaches remained closed on Tuesday as authorities closely monitored the water for any sign of the shark.

A rescue helicopter service later spotted a 10ft bronze whaler shark near the site of the attack - a section of the beach known as "shark tower".

The novice surfer first thought the shark was simply his friend goofing around, however, he soon realized it was a shark.

"The surf was rubbish yesterday, so it wasn't even worth it".

As of November 1, there have been 18 shark attacks in Australia in 2017, with only one fatality, according to the Australian Shark Attack File. "It wasn't even worth it".
