North Korean defector was shot six times by border troops: UNC

A soldier fled North Korea today – getting shot

It occurred in one of the few spots that such an attempt is possible: the Joint Security Area in the truce village of Panmunjom, the only part of the heavily fortified DMZ where North Koreans and South Koreans face each other.

"He then exited the vehicle and continued fleeing south across the line as he was sacked upon by other soldiers from North Korea", it said in a statement.

The soldier bolted from a guard post at the northern side of Panmunjom village in the Joint Security Area to the southern side of the village, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

He was shot in the shoulder and elbow and was taken to a South Korean hospital, the Defence Ministry said.

A JCS official quoted by Yonhap news agency said the South's soldiers heard a gunshot and then retrieved the unarmed soldier in the mid-afternoon.

Among issues the North Koreans have raised with her in recent months, DiMaggio said, were everything from Trump's tweet urging Tillerson to give up on diplomacy with North Korea ("Is this a good cop/bad cop that he's doing with Tillerson?") to Trump's decision this fall to decertify Iran's compliance with the nuclear deal forged by his predecessor, Barack Obama.

The incident, which happened in broad daylight around 4 pm, comes at a time of heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula over the North's nuclear weapons programme.

North Korea has typically accused South Korea of enticing its citizens to defect, something the South denies.

More than 30,000 North Koreans have defected to the South since the end of the 1950-53 war, but it's rare for soldiers to flee across the DMZ, much less the JSA.

If North Korea is proven to have fired shots through the area, this would constitute a breach of the armistice agreement. More than a million mines are believed to be buried inside the zone.

President Donald Trump attempted to visit the DMZ during his visit to South Korea last week, although it was not clear if he was heading to the Joint Security Area.

This makes the area a popular stop for visitors from both sides.

The most famous incident was in 1976, when two American army officers were killed by ax-wielding North Korean soldiers. That prompted Washington to send nuclear-capable B-52 bombers to intimidate the North before the adversaries pulled back from the brink of conflict.

The U.S. -led United Nations Command, which oversees the South Korean side of the JSA, said the defector drove the jeep near the de facto border line.
