6 terrorists, one IAF Garud soldier killed in J&K encounter

One IAF Garud commando was martyred and five terrorists including the nephew of 26/11 Mumbai attacks mastermind Zakir-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, have been killed by the security forces in north Kashmir's Bandipora district on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, the gunfight erupted at Chandrageer Hajin, 32 kms from Srinagar, when joint teams of Police, Army and CRPF launched an operation after an intelligence reports said militants were hiding in the area.

Troops also retaliated and in the ensuing exchange of fire, five militants were killed, he said. Reportedly, one of the dead militants was the son of Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi.

"An IAF Garud commando was killed, while an army soldier was injured", he said. "Weapons and ammunition recovered", DGP SP Vaid tweeted.

Complaint against Farooq Abdullah, Rishi Kapoor over remarks on PoK
Abdullah also called for reversal of all Central laws extended to J&K after 1953. "The restoration of autonomy to J-K is non-negotiable", he asserted.

A senior police officer told DH that it was a group of nine LeT militants led by Mehmood Bhai which had made Hajin their basin for nearly two years.

On October 29, 2017, Constable Zahir Abbas of J&K Police and two LeT terrorists got killed in an encounter in Mir Mohalla, Hajin.

The officer who was killed was a commando of Indian Air Force elite's Special Forces unit Garud. The Lashkar leadership has been killed in southern districts of Kashmir where its commanders and key militants including Junaid Matto, Abu Ismail and Arif Lelhari fell a year ago.

Today's operation in the LeT's stronghold in Hajin is being interpreted as a major achievement for Police and security forces and a remarkable setback for all militants, particularly those active in northern Valley. Lakhvi is among the three globally prosecuted terrorists named by India (Hafiz Saeed and Dawood Ibrahim being the other two) and the European Union in their joint statement to combat terrorism.
