IKEA Recalls Dresser After Eighth Child Death

Jozef DudekGoFundMe

The recalled chests and dressers pose a serious tip-over and entrapment danger that has killed eight children so far, according to a news release.

Petersson said Ikea has had an "extensive communication" campaign through social media, its website and television and print ads.

The most recent death was in May, when a 2-year-old boy from California who became trapped by an IKEA Malm three-drawer chest that was not fastened to the wall. More than 90 children have been injured.

IKEA is urging customers with the affected chests and dressers to return them for a refund or for fix.

In all, IKEA has received 186 reports of tip-over incidents involving MALM chests and dressers, including 91 injuries to children, while they have also received 113 reports of tip-overs for other IKEA chests and dressers that lead to injuries of 53 children.

These recalled children's and adult chests and dressers do not comply with the requirements of the USA voluntary standard (ASTM-2057-14) which addresses clothing storage units over 30 inches high.

The authorities here said that with the killing of three more militants, the toll has risen to 21 in the first 21 days of November.

Questions have mounted regarding whether IKEA has properly recalled the products.

But lawyers for the Dudek family said the recall had been "poorly publicised" and "ineffective in getting these defective and unstable dressers out of children's bedrooms".

The recall is for all Ikea chest and dressers that do not comply with US voluntary industry standards.

Owners of the recalled dressers should stop using them if they are not attached to a wall and should contact IKEA. They included 8 million Malm chest and dressers that were sold from 2002 through June 2016.

If you opt for the refund, IKEA will even pick up the dresser from your home free of charge.

That do not comply with U.S. voluntary industry standards, including an estimated 8 million items under the Malm design.
