A board of Air Force officers will investigate.

Some eyewitnesses reported seeing a parachute and one pilot descending to the ground, the Del Rio News-Herald reported.

The two pilots were on Monday flying T-38 Talon, a twin-engine supersonic jet assigned to Laughlin Air Force Base near Del Rio.

Laughlin AFB officials say emergency personnel and first responders were on scene, but no information was provided about the surviving pilot's injuries.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard says the office's phone lines, including 911, were down as a result of the fire. The fire started on vacant land around 10 p.m.in the area near Brown and Joclyn roads, across from Great Lake Crossing.

The injured pilot was taken to Val Verde Regional Medical Center, authorities said. The cause of the crash is under investigation, according to the statement.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. about 14 miles northwest of the base.

"Our community has suffered the irreplaceable loss of one of our pilots", said Col. Charlie Velino, 47th Flying Training Wing commander. No names were released until family could be notified, according to a base statement. Some 500 T-38 Talons are still in service from the almost 1,200 built from 1961-72 for the Air Force and NASA. Our Airmen and their families are incredibly important to us, and our top priority.
