Trump administration to end provisional residency protection for 60000 Haitians

We must remain committed to those principles and stand with our neighbors in Haiti as they tackle their challenges.

Dupuy said the Haitian government is corrupt.

There are more than 400 thousand people living in the United States with TPS.

"This is unfair to a country that has been going through so much, a political, social and economic situation", Dupuy said.

The Associated Press reported that a Trump administration official was digging for "unorthodox" information on Haitian TPS recipients as DHS considered the extension: crime data and information related to public benefits.

But the official, one of several authorized to brief reporters, said that Acting DHS Secretary Elaine Duke, after extensive research and input from USA and Haitian government officials, as well as experts, had "assessed overall that extraordinary temporary conditions" that justified the designation in the first place, "had sufficiently improved such that they no longer prevent nationals of Haiti from returning". "But if you came into the country because you want to have a better life and you want to help your family and you want to help the country where you are, the United States, you don't deserve to be deported", he said.

But the Trump administration says conditions there have now improved and its nationals can return safely. Should DHS fail to extend TPS for both El Salvador and Honduras, it would subject 260,000 immigrants-who come from two of the three countries that make up what has been referred to as "Central America's triangle of death"-to deportation".

But the Trump administration has repeatedly noted that the program was meant to be temporary, and not a way for people to become long-term legal residents of the United States.

Franken, already a senator for two years, reportedly came in during an event and the two made a decision to take a photo together. Lindsay Menz, 33, told CNN in an interview that Franken grabbed her buttocks when they posed for a photo together in 2010.

Department of Homeland Security Acting Secretary Elaine Duke announced Monday that the administration was revoking the status for tens of thousands of Haitians, most of whom live in Miami.

In May 2017, then-Secretary Kelly announced a limited extension for Haiti's TPS designation, stating that he believed there were indications that Haiti - if its recovery from the 2010 natural disaster continued at pace - may not warrant further TPS extension past January 2018.

Since the 2010 quake, the number of displaced people in Haiti has decreased by 97 percent.

TPS for Honduras and Nicaragua are now set to expire on January 5. "Temporary Protected Status is a program that needs to be defended, and we must fight for it". They also highlighted that termination will create labor dislocations in certain construction, food processing, hospitality, and healthcare industries that have relied on Haitian TPS workers since 2010.

Gov. Charlie Baker, a Republican, last week wrote to Duke urging the US government to find a way to let citizens of Haiti, El Salvador and Honduras who benefited from TPS remain in the country.

Extension of the protected status for Haitians "sends a bad signal that the Trump administration may not really be as interested in enforcing the law as first thought", Kobach said.

In May the Trump administration announced it would extend protections to Haitians who fled to the USA until January 2018, but might shut down the program early in the new year. They argue that it is contrary to American values to force people to return to a country that is risky and unstable.
