HDMI 2.1 Supports Larger Bandwidth, Higher Resolutions

HDMI Forum has launched version 2.1 of the HDMI specification, incorporating support for resolutions of up to 10K and dynamic HDR formats. The group said the HDMI Compliant Test Specification, which includes minimum requirements and testing procedures for eligible products, will be available "in stages" between Q1 and Q3 of 2018. The cable incorporates low EMI (electro-magnetic interference) to reduce interference with nearby wireless devices.

Perhaps just as pleasing to your peepers as the higher resolutions and refresh rates is the delivery of Dynamic HDR to compatible TV screens. It can also work with higher refresh rates, specifically at 4K (120Hz) and 8K (60Hz).

Dynamic HDR support ensures every moment of a video is displayed at its ideal values for depth, detail, brightness, contrast, and wider colour gamuts-on a scene-by-scene or a frame-by-frame basis.

Microsoft Office apps now available on Google Chromebook users
It is for the first time that office is available for Chromebook users through Google Play in terms of general release. Most others, however, have either never seen the apps on offer or have had a sporadic, inconsistent experience.

As for those upgrades, the HDMI v2.1 standard will offer 48Gbps of bandwidth, which is a significant improvement over 18Gbps of bandwidth on the HDMI 2.0.

You'll need a new high-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 cable to support the fresh features, but fear not: Those cables are also backwards-compatible with existing HDMI implementations.

Much like FreeSync and G-Sync, the variable refresh rate tech baked into HDMI 2.1 should help decrease input latency and eliminate frame tearing. Quick Media Switching aims to end jarring black screens when videos switch, and eARC lets HDMI's audio return channel handle lossless audio. Quick Frame Transport promises to reduce latency, important for fast-pace games and VR. Auto Low Latency Mode automatically sets the ideal latency setting for lag-free and uninterrupted viewing and interactivity.

The HDMI Forum is an open trade association that guides the future direction of HDMI technology and develops new versions of the HDMI Specification. HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc.
