Trump defends scaling back Utah monuments

President Donald Trump speaks at the Utah State Capitol after he called for a 90 percent reduction in the size of Utah's Bears Ears National Monument and 50 percent reduction to the state's Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument in Salt L

President Trump will on Monday announce plans to slash the size of two USA national parks, provoking fury from environmentalists, native american tribes and conservationists.

The first proclamation Trump signed will shrink the size of the Bears Ears National Monument by 85 percent, or around 1.1 million acres. Prior to joining the U's political science department, Tim worked for former Salt Lake City Mayor Ted Wilson and former Utah Gov. Scott Matheson. "They don't know your land". They say Monday's action will open the public land to mining and drilling. Previous presidents have reduced the size of national monuments more than a dozen times. Bears Ears was established by President Obama in 2016, while Grand Staircase-Escalante was established in 1996 by President Clinton.

The Trump administration can resize an existing national monument thanks to a provision in The Antiquities Act of 1906.

ALTERED CARBON Trailer: Netflix's Cyberpunk Show Is Also Its Most Expensive Yet
The epic trailer for Netflix's Altered Carbon was released on Monday, a world set 500 years in the future where humans live in a dystopian universe.

Trump decried what he called "abuses of the Antiquities Act", which he said gave power over land to "far away bureaucrats". "An attack on one national monument is an attack on every national monument".

Before the president had even finished his remarks on Monday, environmental and conservation groups were already labeling Trump's decision "illegal". The President's move was met with protests in Utah and in San Francisco by environmentalists and some Native Americans.
