20-Year-Old Florida Man Responsible For Massive Uber Hack

20-Year-Old Florida Man Responsible For Massive Uber Hack

The paid a hacker $100,000 to destroy the information.

A new report from Reuters says that a Florida man, 20, was behind the massive hack.

Uber was able to determine the hacker's identity by directing him through the bug bounty program, which is hosted by a company called HackerOne.

The unnamed hacker was paid $100,000 by Uber to destroy all the data he'd nicked back in October 2016, according to sources talking to Reuters, and was paid by the ride-hailing company through a "bug bounty" program.

Uber paid the money through a so-called "bug bounty" program normally used to identify small code vulnerabilities, Reuters reported.

World's largest Starbucks opens in Shanghai
Called the Starbucks Roastery Shanghai , the outlet measures an astounding 30,000 sq ft - that is nearly half of a football field. The handcrafted long bar, one of three on site, is aptly-named, as at 88 foot it's the world's longest coffee bar.

Reuters now reports that the identity of one individual who hacked into the personal data of 57 million users and drivers of the company. Hackers and security researchers are typically paid thousands of dollars for bugs they find, depending on their severity. Uber's "bug bounty" service, a program known in the industry, is hosted by HackerOne, a company that offers its platform to several tech companies, the report said. HackerOne's CEO said that he couldn't discuss an individual customer's programs.

Mr Khosrowshahi fired two of the company's security officials, chief security officer Joe Sullivan and attorney Craig Clark, for their failure to disclose the breach to law enforcement at the time, instead choosing to cover it up.

This all has a distinct whiff of bad practice about it, something which has plagued Uber of late, what with losing its London license and the rather nasty actions of former chief executive Travis Kalanick.

It remains unclear who made the final decision to authorise the payment to the hacker and to keep the breach secret, although the Reuters sources said then-CEO Kalanick was aware of the breach and bug bounty payment in November of past year. "I have always been a strong advocate for Uber's innovative technology, but if these revelations prove true, I am disgusted by this cover-up and Uber will be held accountable".

Had the incident taken place after the introduction of the EU's General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) next May, the penalties could have been more severe.
