Apple reveals 'Best of 2017' apps and games

Apple says its app of the year for iPhone is Calm, a meditation and sleep app, and Splitter Critters is 2017's iPhone game of the year.

Similarly to previous annual charts, Apple has revealed top charts for the most popular apps and games of the year too.

On the iPad, professional photo editing app Affinity Photo has been named App of the Year, with Jonathan Blow's The Witness winning Game of the Year; on the iPhone, Apple Design Award 2017 victor Splitter Critters was also named Game of the Year, while meditation and relaxation app Calm was chosen as the App of the Year.

The company's iPad app of the year is Affinity Photo, a professional-level photo editing suite that can handle uncompressed RAW files and allows you to create an unlimited number of layers. Bitmoji, Snapchat, YouTube, Messenger and Instagram were the most popular free apps, while Super Mario Run, 8 Ball Pool, Snake VS Block, Ballz and Subway Surfers topped off the list of popular games.

Portal and Bridge Constructor Mashup Announced
As the name suggests, this is Portal using the Bridge Constructor series , which has sold millions of copies around the world. It tasks players with solving puzzles to cross gaping chasms by constructing bridges stable enough for a truck to drive over.

It has also announced most popular apps, music, movies and more ...

Snapchat's 2016 crown was snatched from them, but only just, by the popular Bitmooji app, which is owned by Snap. In that month alone, roughly 50,000 new apps were added to the iOS App Store while 150,000 new apps found their way to Google Play.

Disney's Moana was the most-watched movie, with "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" and "Wonder Woman" coming in as runners-up.

Apple also has new editorial this time around; "trends of the year". "Game of Thrones" unsurprisingly dominated the iTunes TV charts, followed by "The Walking Dead", HBO's "Big Little Lies", NBC's "This Is Us", PBS's "Victoria" and FX's "The Americans". Apple also noted trends in iTunes U educational content, with computer science being a huge area of interest, with a strong focus on developing apps with Swift. You can see the full USA list here.
