Mueller details $3M spent on early months of Russian Federation probe

US President Donald Trump at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington. Trump has been revisiting his mendacious claim about Barack Obama having not been born in the US – the bogus allegation that launched his political career which under pressure

The private practice lawyers who joined Mueller's office each gave up more than a million dollars in annual pay, according to their previously reported financial disclosures. The Department of Justice spent another $3.5 million to support the investigation.

The sum includes $3.2 million in direct investigation expenses covering things like pay, supplies and rent; $1.7 million was for salary and benefits.

The special counsel investigation into possible coordination between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election has cost more than $6.7 million so far, according to a financial report released Tuesday.

In 2015, Democrats complained that the Republican-led congressional investigation into the terrorist attack on the USA consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans was a waste of taxpayer dollars.

U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office has spent about $3.2 million in the first 4-1/2 months of its investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, the Justice Department revealed in a report on Tuesday.

Duterte wants another year to end drug menace
READ: Memorandum Order 17 signed by Duterte, directing PNP to provide "active support" to Pdea in fighting illegal drugs. Duterte said the anti-drug agency, which has only 2,000 officers, could not effectively carry out the crackdown.

The special counsel also spent $223,643 on travel, nearly entirely for staffers who temporary relocated to the investigation's headquarters in Washington.

Mueller's 17 lawyers - some reassigned from within the government and others brought in from private practice - have charged or negotiated plea deals with four former Trump campaign or administration officials, including former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn. Starr's sprawling investigation, which led the House to impeach Clinton for perjury, contributed to Congress letting a law that gave special investigators wide independence expire in 1999. Mueller's probe, established on May 17, is mandated to continue the FBI investigation into the Russian government's alleged efforts to interfere with the 2016 USA presidential election.

Manafort was charged, along with his longtime business partner Rick Gates, for work on behalf of Ukraine unrelated to the campaign.

Last week, former national security adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents. Those charges involve allegations of money laundering and other financial crimes related to their political consulting work in Ukraine. Reports last week said the special counsel had removed a veteran Federal Bureau of Investigation agent from his team for sending anti-Trump text messages.
