Whistleblower: Flynn told ex-partner Russian Federation sanctions would be ripped up

Image Michael Flynn appears to look at his phone during President Trump's inauguration ceremony

Mr Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said on Wednesday (Dec 6) that the whistle-blower described how within minutes of Mr Trump being sworn in, Flynn texted a former business colleague saying they were "good to go" with a plan to work with Russian Federation on building Middle East nuclear reactors. Cummings described the account in a letter Wednesday to the panel's Republican chairman, Rep. Trey Gowdy of SC.

After getting the texts, Copson said, "Mike has been putting everything in place for us", and, "This is going to make a lot of very wealthy people", Cummings said, quoting the witness. He also lied when he said he did not recall a follow-up conversation with the ambassador, who said that "Russia had chosen to moderate its response to those sanctions as a result of Flynn's request".

That's the explosive, but unverified, allegation of a whistleblower cooperating with House Democrats probing the myriad scandals surrounding Flynn, who pleaded guilty earlier this month to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his contacts with a senior Russian diplomat.

"These grave allegations compel a full, credible and bipartisan congressional investigation", Cummings wrote, according to the New York Times.

Cummings said he had spoken to the witness and called the account a "credible" allegation that Flynn "sought to manipulate the course of global nuclear policy for the financial gain of his former business partners".

The company did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday. And one of the companies involved in the project covered his travel expenses and wrote him a check for $25,000 for the trip, though it's not clear if Flynn cashed the check.

Cummings said that the whistleblower's allegations raise concerns that Flynn improperly aided the nuclear project after joining the White House as one of Trump's top security officials.

Mueller details $3M spent on early months of Russian Federation probe
Last week, former national security adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents. The Department of Justice spent another $3.5 million to support the investigation.

Cummings told Gowdy in his letter that he found the witness "authentic, credible and reliable".

Mueller's office was aware of the witness's account and asked Cummings not to release the information until the special counsel had taken "certain investigative steps", which are now complete, Cummings wrote.

"When you took over as Chairman this summer, you refused to press the White House to comply with our bipartisan request for documents, and you disregarded new evidence we uncovered about General Flynn's secret effort to work with Russian Federation on a plan to build nuclear reactors in Saudi Arabia", he wrote.

Today, I am writing to inform you about a whistleblower who has come forward with evidence that Lt.

The witness told Cummings and committee investigators that Copson shared a text message he had just received from Flynn, who was on stage at the Capitol during Trump's speech.

Mr. Copson quickly showed the whistleblower his phone with the text message. Flynn served as an advisor to the group between April 2015 and June 2016, according to his government disclosures, while it was advocating the nuclear reactor plan. In his letter, he asked Representative Trey Gowdy, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, to subpoena the White House for "all documents - including emails and text messages sent on personal devices" related to Flynn's foreign contacts.

Cummings added: "They have now informed us that they have done so".
