Apple Fixes Bug That Let Hackers Wrest Control of Smart Home Devices

But it may highlight concerns around smart home functionality, as users connecting more pieces of their home to an ecosystem like HomeKit, Assistant or Alexa. Given that the connected-accessories that are compatible with HomeKit extend to security cameras, smart locks, garage door openers and thermostats, the potential for abuse can not be taken lightly. The good news is that Apple has since offered a temporary fix which is said to be done server-side, meaning that no action is needed by the user.

Apple has issued a fix for a vulnerability in its HomeKit framework that could have allowed hackers to connect to and open smart locks and other home devices. To exploit the bug the attackers would need to know the email address associated with the Apple ID of the homeowner and knowledge of how the system worked. The fix does, however, disable remote access to shared users, but this will be restored in a software update next week.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple fixed the problem through a software update implemented soon after the report was published.

The bug, first reported on Thursday by Apple-tracking site 9to5Mac and since fixed, appeared to have affected Apple's iOS 11.2 operating system.

In October, many people found that the letter "i" was being replaced by the letter A and a symbol when they upgraded to iOS 11.

Apple was also forced to apologize after a serious security flaw that allowed anyone to take control of a Mac running the latest version of macOS High Sierra with a blank password was revealed.

At the time, the company apologised and said "our customers deserve better".
