Google Doodle honours 'First Lady of the Lens' Homai Vyarawalla

Google Doodle Without Homai Vyarawalla India's national memory would perhaps have remained incomplete

They will remain with me. She would take up assignments that needed a lot of physical exertion; high accuracy to get that ideal shot and then deliver them on time - hence, giving the world a glimpse of India's most significant events.

Internet search engine giant Google honours the first female photo-journalist of India, Homai Vyarawalla, with a sketch doodle consisting of black-and-white and sepia line drawings. She started her career during the World War II with the "The Illustrated Weekly of India" magazine which published many of her iconic pictures. She did a diploma in Arts from J J School of Arts, Mumbai, and learnt photography from Maneckshaw Vyarawalla whom she married in 1941.

Homai's Google Doodle today is a reminder of her contribution, her will to succeed despite the odds, and an inspiration who shows nothing is impossible. The departure of Lord Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten and the funerals of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Lal Bahadur Shashtri. She also worked with British Information Services. She was first introduced to photography by her husband Manekcshaw Vyarawala, a photographer at the Times of India.

Newborn dies 7 days after mistakenly declared dead by Delhi hospital
The action was taken after the victim's family members lodged an FIR against the Max Hospital branch for negligence. The story came to light after the friend of the child's father tweeted the incident with the exorbitant bill.

She died in Vadodara on January 15, at the age of 98 due to a lung disease. In the year 1989, she lost her son and only child.

Vyarawalla always believed that a key to a good photograph is timing, composition, and angle. "But there's only one who gets the right moment and the right angle", she said in an interview to The Hindu.

In 2010, she was conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the I&B Ministry and in 2011, she was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award in India.
