The operation people who U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement described as "public safety threats", the agency said in a Friday release.

Yet, the increases can nearly certainly be attributed to the election of President Donald Trump, who took office in January and has greatly expanded the mandate for immigration officials to arrest and remove people in the US illegally.

The roundup targeted "criminal aliens and immigration violators" across Northern Kentucky, ICE agents said, and resulted in a handful of arrests in five Kentucky cities.

After taking office, President Donald Trump pledged to take on immigration across the country. There were 25 men and two women arrested.

Criminal convictions of people arrested during the MI enforcement operations included assault on a police officer or probation officer, larceny, assault and battery DUI, operating while intoxicated, domestic violence, disorderly person, failure to stop at the scene of an accident, public indecency, indecent exposure, retail fraud and welfare fraud, according to ICE agents.

Protest near US Embassy in Beirut sparks clashes
Several people reported temporary breathing problems as a result of being hit with tear gas, Lebanese television LBC said. Thousands also participated in demonstrations in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Sunday in response to Trump's statement.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that federal agents finished the two-day operation Thursday.

The ICE operation targeted immigrants who were convicted criminals and individuals who violated immigration laws.

Five of the 27 people arrested during this week's operation could face federal prosecution for re-entering the country after deportation, according to ICE agents. The agency has conducted several mass arrests throughout 2017.

"However, as ICE Acting Director Thomas Homan has made clear, ICE does not exempt classes or categories of removable aliens from potential enforcement".
