BBC to announce victor of African Footballer of the Year today (Monday)

Egypt and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah

The Premier League top scorer - with 13 - won the award for his electric start to his Reds career, scoring 19 goals in all competitions in a mere 24 matches, as well as his exploits for Egypt.

Salah, 25 is also in the race for the African Player of the Year award to be awarded by the African Football Confederation (CAF) on January 4 in Accra, Ghana.

While Salah has made a name for himself at Liverpool since his summer move from Roma, his biggest achievement to date came for his country.

The Reds are next in action against struggling West Brom at Anfield on Wednesday night but they won't be complaining too much if Salah continues his hot streak against Alan Pardew's men. "You feel like you did a great year, so I am very happy".

This is the first time Salah has been nominated for African Footballer of the Year and he becomes the first Egyptian to win it since Mohamed Aboutrika in 2008.

The Liverpool ace beat Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Naby Keita, Sadio Mane and Victor Moses to get his hands on the prize for the first time. "I am a really lucky person because I've had the opportunity to work with a few fantastic, outstandingly good players - and now I am happy I have it with Mo", Klopp told Liverpool's official website.

He also added: "I want everyone in Egypt to follow my way".

Salah picked up the prestigious award on Monday to further elongate Nigeria's long wait to have one of her players win the award.

"I want to be the best Egyptian ever so I work hard".
